Hi, I'm developing a (Jooomla) component to handle Journals using iCalendar VJOURNAL items to store and sync entries between sites and devices. Currently I am using the SimpleCalDav php library which hasn't been updated for 8 years (but still pretty much works) but I like the Zcontent/calendar approach and stumbled upon this current fork from there.

A quick look at the code it seems icalendar assumes that only VEVENT items are of interest (in the ZCiCal class)

Any clues as to what might be required or problems there might be to add VJOURNAL (and possibly VTODO) functionality to icalendar.

If it's something you don't want to take on yourself I might be prepared to find time myself with a little guidance. If it's something you can easily do then please consider this a feature request.

VJOURNAL is an under-used feature of the iCal spec that is starting to gain some traction - especially with the release of jtxBoard for Android which provides an excellent. potentially cross-platform, way of sharing journal entries and notes across sites and devices. (basically Journal items are much like events but without an end or duration, and notes don't even have DTSTART)

This library has a bit of a weird history. I found it myself in searching for a good calendar library. Code was not modern, so I fixed it up and submitted a PR, but the maintainer never accepted it, even after I had contacted him prior to submitting the PR.

So I decide to release it myself and put in a comment that there was a new updated version. Which is probably how you found it. It has also become my most downloaded package!

Anyway, I don't really use much of the ICalendar code in my app, and I am not really familiar with the spec. This library appears to be fairly low level node type library, so maybe you don't really need to do anything except add the right nodes.

First I would try to use the library to generate what you need. If it does not work, give me an example file and I can look into what is required. Or submit a PR and I can take a look at your code and see if it makes sense.

Anyway thanks Bruce/Patrick. I'm getting to a point of no return for switching library I'm using and I'm starting to have to make a lot of mods to SimpleCalDav and this looks much cleaner so I'm inclined to give it a try. Will fork and post pull requests if I get anywhere.

Let me know if you have any specific questions. I just did a fairly major cleanup recently, so now more familiar with the code.

Will look forward to a PR. Be sure to add some tests. Also throw some example .ics files in tests/examples and some php code in examples so others can benefit.

Thanks Bruce - it must be an oddity in github email notifications, or possinly thunderbird. The email notification for the post above, (and quoted below) said it was from someone I know online as Patrick in Germany. It seemed odd, but not impossible that he was also involved in this project - hence my confusion. No idea how that happened.

Anyway, many thanks for clarifying. I'll fork and have a play and let you know if any questions arise. I think just adding VJORNAL as an alternative top level node should enable both to be recognised.
