This PR requires eclipse-lemminx/lemminx#1891

Add "Catalog entry" option to the "Bind to grammar/schema..." wizard:

  • Pick from existing catalog entries (grouped by catalog file)
  • Create new catalog entry in existing catalog
  • Create new catalog file and register in xml.catalogs setting
  • Auto-detect entry type (DTD→public, XSD/RNG→uri)
  • Add design document with catalog spec overview and decisions

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The grammar-binding wizard can now use entries from XML catalogs, alongside local and remote grammar sources.
    • Select an existing catalog entry or add a new entry to an existing or newly created catalog. The wizard applies the entry and binds the XML document to it.
    • Catalog entry types are suggested based on the grammar file extension.
  • Documentation
    • Added design documentation describing catalog-based grammar binding and its workflows.

The pull request adds catalog-entry choices and catalog creation and entry workflows to the grammar-association command, along with command constants. It also adds a design document describing proposed catalog enumeration, resolution, and grammar-binding behavior.

Changes: Catalog-Based Grammar Binding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog entry contract and command surface
docs/design/BindGrammarViaCatalog.md, src/commands/serverCommandConstants.ts
The design document describes catalog entry types, selection, proposed enumeration and resolution, and grammar binding. The command constants add catalog listing, entry addition, and catalog creation commands.
Select and bind a catalog entry
docs/design/BindGrammarViaCatalog.md, src/commands/registerCommands.ts
The grammar-source picker adds a catalog-entry option. The command lists entries, lets the user select an entry or add one, and applies server-provided edits to bind the document.
Create catalogs and add entries
docs/design/BindGrammarViaCatalog.md, src/commands/registerCommands.ts
The command can create or select a catalog, register it, add an entry, apply and save server-provided edits, and then bind the document. The design document describes these flows and a phased implementation plan.

Catalog registration or edits can fail without the wizard stopping or clearly reporting the failure. These are bounded failure paths, but they should be corrected before relying on the new workflow.

Explanation

The title "Add bind grammar via XML catalog wizard" matches the main change: a new Catalog entry option in the Bind to grammar/schema wizard. The changeset adds catalog listing, entry creation, and catalog creation to grammarAssociationCommand, plus server command constants and a design doc. The title is short, specific, and does not list files.

Explanation

The description states the PR depends on eclipse-lemminx PR #1891. It lists the new Catalog entry wizard option, catalog picking and creation, xml.catalogs registration, DTD/XSD/RNG entry-type detection, and the design document. These items match the changeset.

Align Section 5.1.5 with the implemented command contract.

The client and LemMinX server use [documentURI, entryType, bindingType, identifier, targetURI, uriValue]. Section 5.1.5 documents a different order and omits two arguments. Update the design document; changing the client order would break the current server contract.

Handle a rejected catalog binding edit.

workspace.applyEdit can return false when VS Code does not apply the edit. The current code ignores this result, so the document can remain unbound without user feedback.

Await the xml.catalogs update and stop the bind flow on failure.

VS Code can reject a ConfigurationTarget.Workspace update when no workspace is open. The catalog flow currently ignores that promise and can continue with an unregistered catalog.

Return the update promise, await it in both catalog flows, and return after showing the error.

Stop when the catalog edit is rejected.

workspace.applyEdit(workEdits) returns whether the edit was applied. If it returns false, this flow still saves the catalog document when open and calls bindWithCatalogEntry with an entry that was not added. Check the result and return before saving or binding. Hi Angelo, I tested the catalog wizard with DTD and XSD, and the main flow works well. The catalog is created, entries are added, and the binding works through the catalog.

Two things I noticed:

When I add a new entry through the wizard, the DOCTYPE gets the full file:///Users/... path. When I pick an existing entry, it gets just “note.dtd”, which matches the design doc.

Once a catalog with entries exists, the “Which catalog” menu has no “Select existing catalog...” option, so I can’t add an entry to another existing catalog file.
